cheesy video game metaphors

i was writing for a bit there, and then i went camping and now i’m exhausted and all my creative energy needs a recharge. i had some carpal tunnel too. haven’t crocheted any hearts in a while. quite a while. the last few i made were a bit of a struggle. the colours weren’t vibing. none of the accessories were vibing with whatever i was feeling. a break was a good thing.

a couple more leon kennedy’s sold at haus of misfit, though, so that really makes me happy. recently i started playing the resident evil 2 remake with my kids. it’s been a fun summer activity, but now i’m ada in the sewers and i hate using that stupid scanner thing and trying to follow the cable systems to hack into doors, especially now with mr. x following me around again. it’s too stressful.

sometimes it feels good to be like, “fuck it”, and then let him punch me the 4-5 times it takes to die. i’m taking a break. i’ll get back to it. hopefully it’ll be easier.

last night i was letting my 7-year-old son read me a book. he’s a bit behind in reading. his teacher told me that he has all the core concepts down, but he’s so worried about not getting it right that he locks up and can’t do anything at all. i’m hoping to help him. last night he was reading big egg by molly coxe and he struggled with the word “small” and had an absolute meltdown instead of accepting the help i offered.

i told him there was no shame in it, but he insisted.

the meltdown lasted 15 minutes or so. my husband came in while my son was sobbing and he’s like, “what the heck is going on?” and i was like “we’re just reading” with a smile on my face, because it was kind of ridiculous and stupid and funny and it kind of loved it, really.

i explained to my son that it was okay to struggle. i played re9 in assisted mode. i’m playing re2 in standard. some parts are hard, but you die and you respawn and you get to try again, and if it’s still too hard you can take a damn break and return it.

after i calmed down, i asked him where in the book he wanted to “respawn”. he got it eventually.

it’s a smoky day outside, so maybe i’ll play resident evil again today.
